| Church
of Saint George
Taking the road from Paphos to
Poli Chrysochous, we will meet the beautiful village Goudi. The
village is situated among the lemon and olives trees and it has
166 habitants. In the center of the village we will find the central
church, which is built among the traditional houses.
This church is dedicated to Saint George. It is
relatively big and it can accommodate up to 700 faithful.
Architectonically, it is singled-room with inner
archs and it goes back to the 18th century. It is a rectangular
church and its external wall is stone-made and white painted. In
1927, the church was restored and extended.
The bell tower is tall with archs and it abuts on the wall on the
side of the Temple. The yard is big and paved with slabs. The fencing
of the church is made with low columns and among them there are
flowerpots.
The iconostasis of the church is wooden and handmade.
It dates back to 1930 and its icons back to 1900. Above them there
is a second zone, showing the Apostles and a third zone showing
miniatures of other Saints. The Psalter stands are wooden, simple
and are recently made.
There is also a gallery, which is small, and wooden
made.
The icon, which is dedicated to Saint George,
stands on a special iconostasis on the left side of the “central”
one. The feast of Saint George takes place on the 23rd of April
and on the 3rd November.
Church of the cemetery dedicated to Prophet
Ilias
The church of Prophet Ilias is situated on the
east side of the community, outside the village and inside the cemetery.
It is built on the feet of a hill and it was constructed in 1920.
It can accommodate up to 60 faithful.
It is a small church and architectonically, it is a singled room
with inner archs.
Externally, it is stone-made and white painted
and it does not have a bell tower.
The church is very simple on the inside. The iconostasis is wooden
and recently made. It has two doors, the central and the north one.
There are very few icons in the church, which are dated back to
the early 19th century.
Masses take place twice a year: on the 20th of
July, when there is a procession of the icon of Prophet Ilias, and
the Easter Tuesday service.
Church of Agios Aristos (Saint Aristos)
It is said that in the past the church was dedicated
to Agios Sina because administratively it belonged to Oros Sina
and this is the reason that many monks from there were accommodated
in the church.
During the era of Saracen, the monks sold to the
habitants of the neighbor village Choli, a considerable extent of
ground, which belonged to the monastery, so that they could contribute
economically to their church. Unfortunately, within the years the
chapel collapsed.
One kilometer outside the village of Goudi, on
the top of a mountain, rests the remnants of the chapel. Unfortunately,
we do not have accurate information concerning the exact time that
the chapel of Agios Aristos was built, or any further information
for its history. We are aware though, that in the past, it used
to be the bishopric of the area.
